Digitalization Center (DigiZ)

With the establishment of the Digitalization Center (DigiZ), the University Medical Center Göttingen has a central hub for digital teaching and learning formats. It offers a versatile infrastructure to digitally support and further develop individual areas of work, while promoting innovative networking and the integration of digital solutions in medical education.

The Digitalization Center is led by the E-Learning Coordinator and is supported by the eScouts, a team of five trained student assistants. The eScouts offer practical assistance with technical handling, planning and implementing media projects, as well as pedagogical questions related to the design of digital teaching materials. They are available for individual consultations, technical introductions, and support for specific production projects by appointment.

Digitalization Facilities

Greenscreen Studio

This studio is equipped with a camera, microphones, lighting, and a green screen, making it suitable for recording video material. Using green screen technology, various backgrounds can be digitally added during post-production.

Audio and Editing Room

The audio and editing room is located nearby. It features an audio mixing console and a technical cabinet with extensive equipment. This room provides suitable conditions for editing and dubbing audio content.

Podcast Studio

The Podcast Studio is equipped with a computer and two microphones and is suitable for recording audio interviews or solo voice recordings. It can also be used for adding voiceovers to video material or editing existing audio tracks, for example, to correct speech errors.

Meeting Room

The meeting room is equipped with two workstations, a large screen, and a conference table with seating for five. This room is used for coordination with project participants as well as for the planning, discussion, and further development of multimedia projects. Both PCs are equipped with Adobe Creative Cloud software, enabling the editing of video and audio materials.

Services Offered for Teaching Staff

Teaching staff have the opportunity to use the rooms and technical equipment of the Digitalization Center to create digital teaching materials. The management of the Digitalization Center and the eScouts provide comprehensive support to instructors. This also includes the use of Stud.IP and ILIAS, including the integration of interactive teaching elements. Additionally, instructors receive advice on the didactic conception, design, and preparation of digital teaching materials, among other things, to sustainably motivate students and actively engage them in the learning process.

In addition to these core areas, the recording of teaching sessions and the live streaming of lectures at the Medical Campus Wolfsburg are supported. This enables instructors to flexibly document their courses and make them accessible to a wider audience.

Many projects have already been successfully implemented within the framework of the Digitalization Center. Examples include explanatory videos, such as those on microscopy in the Department of Anatomy, the production of numerous recorded lectures including in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, as well as the creation of teaching videos for Dermatology and other specialties.

History and Future Prospects

Today’s Digitalization Center has undergone a multi-stage development. From the late 1970s until around 2018, it was known as the Audiovisual Center (AVZ) and primarily served the production of educational films as well as the photographic reproduction of teaching materials. After a brief transitional period during which it was used as an archive, the facilities underwent extensive renovation and technical modernization in the summer of 2022. Since the end of 2024, the Digitalization Center has been available to instructors in a new role as a modern media production and consulting hub.

Looking ahead, the Digitalization Center is intended to be systematically further developed. The focus could especially be on innovative approaches such as the responsible and resource-efficient use of artificial intelligence, the application of augmented and virtual reality, and the establishment of a central digital infrastructure for the consolidation and structured provision of high-quality teaching content — including in the context of healthcare delivery. Additionally, the center could offer practical workshops and provide templates and materials based on both established and innovative didactic concepts, supporting instructors in the planning, execution, and evaluation of courses. Guest lectures by external experts would provide valuable impulses for research and practice.

In the long term, the Digitalization Center aims to serve as an innovation and transfer space for medical education and to network with national and international projects.
