Service and Support Structures for Digital Teaching at UMG

eScout Program

The eScout Program functions as a central point of contact for instructors and student tutors involved in digital teaching at the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). The program offers individualized, needs-based support for the design and implementation of digital teaching and learning offerings.

Familiarizing oneself with various learning management systems and interactive tools, as well as the didactically meaningful design of sophisticated and engaging teaching materials, typically requires a significant amount of time and can create initial barriers to adoption. In addition, the use of student assistants to support instructors in the digitalization of their teaching can incur additional costs. The eScout Program addresses precisely these challenges with the goal of sustainably integrating digital teaching at UMG.

The program employs so-called eScouts – student assistants who have completed didactic and technical training and who subsequently provide targeted support to both instructors and student tutors at UMG based on their specific needs.

What are the responsibilities of the eScouts?

The responsibilities of the eScouts are wide-ranging. Their primary goal is to provide individualized support to instructors in the area of digital teaching.

Examples of typical tasks include:

Technical Support and Equipment

  • Assistance with hybrid teaching scenarios (e.g. use of lecture hall technology)
  • Support for video recordings of teaching sessions (lectures, seminars, etc.) – both during regular teaching operations and outside of them
  • Video editing and post-production of recorded teaching sessions
  • Provision and support of technical equipment (e.g. laptops with recording software, microphones)

Didactic Consultation and Material Development

  • Guidance on using learning management systems (e.g. Stud.IP, ILIAS)
  • Support in designing digital teaching and learning elements
  • Advice on the pedagogically meaningful integration of digital tools (e.g. Mentimeter)
  • Creation of practical support materials for instructors (e.g. quick guides, checklists)

Individual Support

  • Digitization of existing teaching materials
  • Handling of individual requests and needs-based consultation

Project MOVIE

The MOVIE project ("MOdern VIsual Information and Elaboration") was originally initiated by students and launched at the end of 2018. As of January 2023, MOVIE has been integrated as a core component of the eScout Program. The project focuses on recording teaching sessions, as well as editing and providing them for instructors and students.
