The groundbreaking ceremony on 3 December 2024 marked the start of construction work on the site in front of ward building 1 of the UMG. Intensive planning has been underway since September 2022, with excavators due to arrive in January 2025. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2029, with UMG clinical operations due to begin by 2030.
Most of the hospital care will be based in NIKO, the new name for construction phase one, selected from creative suggestions submitted by future users of the building. NIKO stands for emergency room (= Notaufnahme), intensive care (= Intensivmedizin), nursing (= Krankenpflege), and surgical center (= Operationszentrum) – the medical areas covered by construction phase 1.
