A Visit to Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium

Insights into the connections between "Heart & Brain" with RTG2824

On May 5, 2025, our first cohort PhD student, Ege Kingir (RP9.1), along with MD scholarship holder, Magdalena Cöln (RP2), accompanied by Tobias Brügmann (RP2) and Dörthe Katschinski (RP3, RTG2824 Speaker), had the exciting opportunity to engage with advanced-level students from the NWT medical technology course at Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium (OHG). The focus of their presentation explored the fascinating connections between the heart and brain, two organs vital to understanding human health.

Ege captivated the students with a discussion on the significant role of the heartbeat signal in the cerebrum, shedding light on its influence and importance in medical science. Magdalena complemented this by sharing her riveting research on selective calcium uptake in heart muscle cells, highlighting advances that could reshape our understanding of cardiac health.

The session blended theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. The students participated in practical experiments, including a 6-phase ECG recording and ultrasound examinations of leg and neck arteries. Both student subjects received perfect health diagnoses, to the relief and joy of all present.

We sincerely hope that this interactive experience provided the students with valuable insights into the field of science, aiding their future internship opportunities or choices of study. We were impressed by their interest and knowledge in cardiac physiology.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium and especially to Dr. Christoph Matthes for his engaged organization and the fruitful opportunity to share our research with eager minds. We also thank the students for their genuine interest and active participation, which made the event both engaging and inspiring!

Please find here the impressions and nice words of Dr. Matthes and his students.
